ccasIfExtVoiceCfgVadEnabled

Module: CISCO-CAS-IF-EXT-MIB

OID (symbolic): CISCO-CAS-IF-EXT-MIB::ccasIfExtVoiceCfgVadEnabled

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.314.1.1.1.1.3

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: TruthValue

Access: read-write

Description: The object specifies VAD (Voice Activity Detection) is enabled for the compression DSPs of this interface.

The value of this object is 'false' if the voice interface associated DS0 group uses null signaling. (The value of ccasGrpCfgType in ccasGrpCfgTable for the DS0 group is set to nullSignaling(16)).

What is ccasIfExtVoiceCfgVadEnabled?

This toggles Voice Activity Detection (VAD) on the compression DSPs serving this voice interface's DS0 group, and per the MIB it is forced to 'false' whenever the group uses null signaling. Enabling VAD lets the gateway stop sending full-rate voice packets during silence and instead trigger comfort-noise/silence suppression, which reduces bandwidth on compressed voice trunks but can occasionally clip the start of speech if set too aggressively. A T1 CAS trunk carrying 24 compressed G.729 calls with VAD enabled might save roughly 30-40 percent of its voice bandwidth during a typical two-way conversation, since each direction is silent close to half the time.
