Description: Manages BSTUN (Block Serial Tunneling) for encapsulating SNA BSC traffic over IP on Cisco routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-BSTUN-MIB?

CISCO-BSTUN-MIB is a Cisco vendor-specific MIB for managing Block Serial Tunneling (BSTUN), a feature that encapsulates legacy SNA BSC (Binary Synchronous Communications) serial traffic over an IP network between Cisco routers. It organizes management into global BSTUN parameters, BSTUN groups, BSTUN ports, and BSTUN routes, exposing configuration such as peer IP address, listener SAP, keepalive interval/limit, protocol type, and local-ack behavior. Its monitoring value is both configuration and fault-oriented: group-level counters for unroutable-transmit and unroutable-receive traffic reveal packets that could not be forwarded due to routing or configuration problems, functioning as a software-level health indicator for the tunneling service. It depends on Cisco's general networking/interface MIB conventions for identifying the underlying serial ports and IP transport, and is scoped entirely within Cisco's private enterprise tree. It is deployed on Cisco routers bridging legacy SNA/BSC serial equipment (such as older mainframe or terminal controllers) across a modern IP WAN.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-BSTUN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers used for legacy SNA/BSC serial tunneling over IP

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll bstunGroupTable/bstunGroupEntry, indexed by bstunGroupIndex, checking bstunGroupUnroutableTransmit and bstunGroupUnroutableReceive counters for unexpected growth, which would indicate BSTUN traffic that cannot reach its peer due to a misconfigured bstunIPAddr or a down IP path. Cross-referencing bstunPeerKeepaliveInterval and bstunPeerKeepaliveLimit against bstunLocalAck settings on the bstunPortTable would help confirm whether a serial-tunnel peer relationship is timing out due to keepalive failures rather than a routing issue, a task that typically begins with a CISCO-BSTUN-MIB download so the relevant objects can be loaded into a MIB browser.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BSTUN group configuration (protocol type, local ack)
  • peer keepalive interval/limit
  • unroutable transmit/receive packet counts
  • BSTUN port and route configuration

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using bstunGroupUnroutableTransmit OID:

Select a Cisco router (legacy SNA/BSC serial tunneling over IP) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type bstunGroupUnroutableTransmit into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of unroutable frames received by this group from the remote partner. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
