What Is CISCO-AAL5-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-AAL5-EXT-MIB is a Cisco-specific extension to the standard RFC 1695 ATM AAL5 MIB, adding extra per-VCC (virtual channel connection) performance counters on Cisco ATM-capable routers and switches. It exposes performance and error-counter data for AAL5 virtual circuits, including dropped packets, dropped octets, and dropped/total cell counts on both the incoming and outgoing directions. This data is directly used to monitor the operational health of ATM hardware interfaces and software forwarding paths, since rising drop counters on a VCC reveal congestion, cell-level errors, or an interface nearing its performance limits well before a circuit fails outright. It explicitly extends RFC 1695 (the standard AAL5 MIB), so it depends on that base ATM MIB for VCC identification and core statistics. It is typically deployed on Cisco ATM edge/core routers carrying AAL5-encapsulated traffic in legacy ATM WAN environments. Engineers can download the CISCO-AAL5-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

The cAal5ExtVccTable/cAal5ExtVccEntry is indexed per virtual channel connection and holds counters such as cAal5VccInDroppedPkts, cAal5VccOutDroppedPkts, cAal5VccInDroppedCells, and cAal5VccOutDroppedCells. An administrator would poll these counters over time on a given VCC to detect a rising rate of dropped cells or octets, which signals congestion, a policing violation, or an underlying hardware issue on that ATM circuit before it causes a service outage.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cAal5VccInDroppedPkts OID:

Select a Cisco ATM-enabled routers/switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cAal5VccInDroppedPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of AAL5 CPCS PDUs dropped at the receive side of this AAL5 VCC at the interface associated with an AAL5 entity. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
