Category: Textual Conventions and Registries, Vendor: Ciena

Description: Enumerates Ciena product lines and platform identifiers for sysObjectID assignment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CIENA-PRODUCTS-MIB?

This is a Ciena-specific MIB module that enumerates Ciena's product lines and platform identifiers as a registration tree of object identifiers, used purely to populate the sysObjectID value returned by Ciena network equipment rather than to expose any monitorable data itself. It contains no data objects, tables, counters, or notifications - it is a pure OID-registration module analogous to the "product ID" branches found in most large vendors' enterprise MIB trees. Because it defines no runtime objects, it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status; its only function is identification, letting a management system map a device's reported sysObjectID back to a specific Ciena product/platform name. It depends on the standard SNMPv2-SMI enterprise OID registration convention (rooted under Ciena's enterprise number) but has no functional dependency on other data-bearing MIBs. It is present in the MIB library of essentially all Ciena optical/packet-transport network elements, used by NMS platforms to identify device type during discovery rather than for ongoing polling. Engineers can download the CIENA-PRODUCTS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-PRODUCTS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ciena optical/packet transport network element (any product using this registration tree)

Monitoring Examples

This module defines only OID assignments for Ciena product/platform identifiers with no data objects, tables, or traps, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe; a management system would read a device's sysObjectID and cross-reference it against this module's OID tree solely to determine which Ciena product model is being managed.
