cienaCesInetIcmpPortUnreachable
Module: CIENA-CES-MGMT-INTERFACE-MIB
OID (symbolic): CIENA-CES-MGMT-INTERFACE-MIB::cienaCesInetIcmpPortUnreachable
OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.1271.2.1.27.1.1.3.1.6
Node type: OBJECT-TYPE
Type: INTEGER
Access: read-only
Description: This object indicates the ICMP port-unreachable setting associated with this address type represented by cienaCesInetAddrType. When on, the corresponding IP stack will send ICMP port-unreachable messages when appropriate to do so. When off, the corresponding IP stack will not send ICMP port-unreachable messages.
What is cienaCesInetIcmpPortUnreachable?
This object controls whether the device sends ICMP port-unreachable messages when a packet arrives for a closed UDP port (on) or stays silent instead (off), as the description states directly. Turning it off can mask which UDP ports are closed from a casual port scan, but it also breaks legitimate tools like traceroute or path-MTU discovery that rely on getting that ICMP message back, so admins weigh reconnaissance-hardening against troubleshooting convenience when setting this. For example, off(2) means a UDP probe to a closed port on the management interface gets no response at all rather than the expected unreachable message.
