Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: INTEGER

Access: read-only

Description: This object indicates the ICMP echo-ignore-broadcasts setting associated with this address type represented by cienaCesInetAddrType. This setting refers to whether the device will ignore ICMP Echo Request messages which are directed toward a multicast or broadcast destination address.

What is cienaCesInetIcmpEchoIgnoreBroadcasts?

This object controls whether the device ignores ICMP Echo Requests sent to a broadcast or multicast destination address (on) or responds to them (off), as the description explains. Turning it on protects the device from being drafted into a Smurf-style amplification attack, where an attacker pings a broadcast address with a spoofed source and every responding host floods that victim with replies. For example, on(1) means a broadcast ping sweep of the management subnet gets silently dropped by this box instead of eliciting a reply that could be weaponized against a spoofed target.
