Category: ATM, Vendor: Nortel

Description: Monitors ATM cell traffic statistics and connection performance on Nortel Centillion ATM switch platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CENTILLION-ATMMON-MIB?

CENTILLION-ATMMON-MIB is a Nortel-specific MIB for the Centillion family of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switches, providing detailed cell-level and port-level traffic monitoring for ATM interfaces. It exposes per-card, per-port statistics such as cell counts, HEC (header error control) errors, SUNI FIFO overruns, and DMA drop counts, along with PVC (permanent virtual circuit) status and ELAN (emulated LAN) monitoring objects. This makes it directly useful for monitoring hardware and link-level health: rising bad-HEC-cell or FIFO-overrun counts point to a failing ATM interface card or degraded physical layer, while signal-detection and PVC status objects reveal whether a circuit is up. The module builds on base ATM interface conventions and is used alongside other Centillion MIBs (bridge group, VLAN, LES/BUS) that together manage the same switch. It is deployed in legacy Nortel Centillion ATM/LAN-emulation switch fabrics found in older enterprise campus backbones. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CENTILLION-ATMMON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CENTILLION-ATMMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel Centillion ATM switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll atmPortStatTable/atmPortStatEntry, keyed by atmStatCardId and atmStatPortId, to track counters like atmRxGoodCell, atmTxGoodCell, atmRxBadHecCell, and atmSuniFifoOverrun for each ATM port. A sustained rise in atmRxBadHecCell or atmSuniFifoOverrun on a specific port typically indicates a failing transceiver or a physical-layer fiber problem, while atmSigDetected going false flags a lost carrier signal. atmPvcStatusMonitor and atmElanMonitor would be checked to confirm that configured PVCs and emulated LANs remain operational.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ATM port cell counters (good/bad cells)
  • HEC error counts
  • SUNI FIFO overruns
  • DMA drop counts
  • PVC status
