Last Updated: 2009-09-10
Category: Cisco Devices, Hardware and Environment
Description: Monitors CPU and memory resource utilization per module on Cisco CBS series small business managed switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CBS-MODULE-RESOURCES-MIB?
CBS-MODULE-RESOURCES-MIB is a Crossbeam Systems XOS MIB (again, Crossbeam rather than Cisco despite the naming) that monitors CPU and memory resource utilization for individual processing modules within an XOS chassis. It exposes per-module CPU speed, core count, and load/utilization averages over 1/5/15-minute windows, along with per-module memory utilization tables. This is squarely a software/hardware performance-monitoring MIB, tracking CPU load and memory pressure on each blade/module so operators can detect overloaded modules before they impact packet-processing performance, and it includes traps for resource-threshold events. It is a standalone Crossbeam vendor MIB, independent of IETF standard host-resources MIBs. It's used by network security operations teams running Crossbeam XOS chassis to track per-module compute headroom in multi-blade security service deployments. Engineers can download the CBS-MODULE-RESOURCES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CBS-MODULE-RESOURCES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Crossbeam Systems XOS security appliance chassis (per-module blades)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polls cbsModuleCPULoadTable entries, cbsModuleCPULoad1, cbsModuleCPULoad5, and cbsModuleCPULoad15, to track short- and long-term CPU load trends for each module. cbsModuleCPUUtil1/5/15 give percentage-based utilization for easier threshold alerting, while cbsModuleCPUSpeed and cbsModuleCPUCount provide the module's compute capacity for context. cbsModuleMemoryTable is checked in parallel; a module showing sustained high CPU load alongside climbing memory utilization signals it needs a workload rebalance, and cbsModuleResourceTraps would fire proactively when a threshold is crossed.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-module CPU load (1/5/15 min)
- per-module CPU utilization percentage
- CPU speed and core count
- per-module memory utilization
- resource threshold trap events
