Category: Web and Application Servers

Description: Manages CacheFlow (early Blue Coat) web cache appliance configuration, proxy services, and content caching performance statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CACHEFLOW-MIB?

CACHEFLOW-MIB is the vendor MIB for CacheFlow Inc. (later acquired by Blue Coat Systems) web-caching and proxy appliances, part of the web infrastructure/caching acceleration product category. Its object tree is largely a product-identification and enterprise registration structure (products, cacheFlowMgmt, cache, and specific model branches like cacheFlow100/500/1000), used to identify the model family and to root vendor-specific management objects for cache configuration and statistics. In monitoring terms it is used to confirm which CacheFlow appliance model is deployed and to access vendor-specific hardware/software status such as caching engine operational state and content-delivery performance counters exposed under the cacheFlowMgmt subtree. It works alongside standard MIB-II/RFC 1213 system and interface objects for baseline device health, since CACHEFLOW-MIB itself focuses on product identity and cache-specific management rather than generic system status. It was typically deployed at ISP or enterprise network edges in the early-2000s to accelerate and monitor web content delivery. Engineers can download the CACHEFLOW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CACHEFLOW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • CacheFlow (Blue Coat) web cache appliance
  • CacheFlow 100/500/1000 series proxy cache

Monitoring Examples

A management station polling the cacheFlowMgmt subtree distinguishes a cacheFlow1000 chassis from a cacheFlow500 or cacheFlow100 unit via the products registration branch, then reads model-specific counters and status objects rooted under cache to track cache hit/miss activity and proxy service health. Because the sample objects here are largely identity/registration nodes rather than leaf counters, most day-to-day monitoring (disk cache utilization, HTTP proxy request rates) would be read from vendor-specific tables nested deeper under cacheFlowMgmt that aren't represented in the sampled list. An admin would primarily use this MIB to auto-detect appliance model and confirm the caching subsystem is enabled and reachable via SNMP.

What Can Be Monitored

  • appliance product/model identity
  • cache management subsystem reachability
  • cache service operational branch
  • proxy caching status
