An administrator would poll simPortRxFrames/simPortTxFrames and simPortRxOctets/simPortTxOctets in simPortStatTable to baseline normal traffic levels on a serial port, then watch simPortRxFcsErrs and simPortInvalidFrames for signs of a failing cable or clocking mismatch. A rising simPortCongestedFrames count would indicate the port's buffers are being overrun, a possible precursor to dropped traffic. simPortClrStatCmd and simPortClrStatTime would be used to reset counters after a fix and record when the last reset occurred, while simNewAtmVcStatTable would be checked for equivalent statistics on individual ATM virtual circuits.
