Category: Power Management

Description: Monitors battery status and charge levels for Broadcom cable gateway hardware.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BRCM-BATTERY-MGMT-MIB?

BRCM-BATTERY-MGMT-MIB is a Broadcom proprietary SNMP module for managing battery backup subsystems on Broadcom-based cable gateway/eMTA devices, such as those providing battery-backed VoIP service during power outages. It exposes hardware status data for the battery subsystem, including capacity, voltage range, measured voltage, validity/selection state, and charger status. Its core monitoring value is hardware health: battCapacity, battMeasuredVoltage, battEstimatedMinutesRemaining, and battEstimatedChargeRemaining let an operator track battery charge and remaining runtime, while battIsValid and battErrors flag a failed, missing, or faulted battery. It is a self-contained Broadcom enterprise MIB, though it typically sits alongside DOCSIS cable modem MIBs on the same device rather than depending on them directly. It is deployed on cable gateway/eMTA hardware from operators who need battery-backed voice service continuity, where the MIB lets NOC systems poll battery health remotely. Engineers can download the BRCM-BATTERY-MGMT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BRCM-BATTERY-MGMT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Broadcom-based cable gateway
  • cable eMTA/VoIP modem

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll batteryTable/batteryEntry indexed by battIndex to read battMeasuredVoltage against battMinimumVoltage/battMaximumVoltage, and check battEstimatedMinutesRemaining to see how long backup power would last during an outage. A battErrors value that is non-zero combined with battIsValid being false would reveal a failed or disconnected battery needing replacement before the next power event. battEstimatedChargeRemaining trending toward zero while battIsSelected is true would indicate the unit is actively drawing down its backup battery.

What Can Be Monitored

  • battery capacity
  • battery voltage (min/max/measured)
  • estimated minutes remaining
  • estimated charge remaining
  • battery validity/selection state
  • battery error conditions

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using battChargerState OID:

Select a Broadcom-chipset DOCSIS cable modems/gateway as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type battChargerState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The current state of the battery charger. Note that all states may not be supported on all types of chargers. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is 'forcedDischarge' or 'eternalSleep', since those indicate the battery charger has stopped normal charge cycling due to a fault. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
