Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BORDERWARE-SMG-MIB?

BORDERWARE-SMG-MIB is a Borderware (now part of Trustwave) vendor MIB for the Secure Mail Gateway (SMG) email security appliance, originally documented as "Mail Firewall" SNMP extensions. It exposes mail queue depth, deferred and total message counts, and per-interval throughput broken down by received, sent, spam, rejected, virus-infected, and clean message counts. Its monitoring focus is software/service status of the mail-processing pipeline: a growing queuedMessages or deferredMessages count signals a backlog or downstream delivery problem, while spikes in mailSpam or mailVirus indicate a change in incoming threat volume, and mailReject trends show policy enforcement activity. It is a self-contained appliance MIB with no strong dependency on external standards beyond generic SNMPv2 conventions. Deployment context is an enterprise email security gateway inspecting inbound/outbound SMTP traffic for spam and malware before delivery, with BORDERWARE-SMG-MIB SNMP monitoring exposing queue depth and threat-volume trends to the operations team.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BORDERWARE-SMG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Borderware Secure Mail Gateway / Mail Firewall appliance

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll queuedMessages and deferredMessages regularly to catch a mail backlog building up, and compare mailRcvd against mailSent over the same mailInterval to spot a growing gap indicating stuck messages. A sudden jump in mailVirus or mailSpam relative to mailClean would flag an active spam/malware campaign hitting the gateway. Sustained high deferredMessages alongside flat mailSent would point to a downstream mail relay being unreachable.

What Can Be Monitored

  • queued and deferred message counts
  • messages received/sent per interval
  • spam-flagged messages
  • virus-infected messages
  • rejected messages
  • clean message throughput

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using queuedMessages OID:

Select a Borderware mail gateway appliance as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type queuedMessages into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of queued mail messages. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
