Organization: Borderware Technology Inc.

Last Updated: 2004-04-11

Category: VPN and Security, Vendor: Borderware

Description: Monitors firewall rule statistics, connection tables, and security events on Borderware Technologies security gateways.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BORDERWARE-FW-MIB?

BORDERWARE-FW-MIB is Borderware Technologies' private MIB extension for its firewall/security gateway products, focused on alarms and security events. It exposes firewall alarm objects — an alarm trigger flag, alarm name, time of last change, and the remote IP address and destination port associated with the triggering traffic — along with standard SNMPv2 conformance groups. It is used primarily to monitor the software/security status of the firewall, specifically detecting when a security alarm has fired and identifying the source and destination of the offending traffic, which supports intrusion and anomaly detection rather than physical hardware health monitoring. Its conformance structure (bwFirewallConformance, bwFirewallCompliances, bwFirewallGroups) follows standard SNMPv2 conformance conventions rather than depending on another functional MIB. It is deployed on Borderware firewall/security gateway appliances protecting enterprise network perimeters, and administrators can download the BORDERWARE-FW-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for alarm monitoring setup.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BORDERWARE-FW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Borderware firewall/security gateway appliance

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polling this MIB would watch alTriggerAlarm to detect when a new firewall alarm has fired, then inspect alName and alLastChange to identify which rule triggered and when, and alRemoteIpAddr/alDestPort to pinpoint the source address and targeted port of the suspicious traffic. A burst of alarms pointing at the same alRemoteIpAddr across multiple alDestPort values would suggest a port scan or brute-force attempt against the protected network.

What Can Be Monitored

  • triggered firewall alarm state
  • alarm name/rule identification
  • remote/source IP address of triggering traffic
  • destination port of triggering traffic
  • time of last alarm change
