What Is BAY-STACK-VRRP-EXT-MIB?
BAY-STACK-VRRP-EXT-MIB is a Nortel/Avaya (BayStack/ERS) extension to the standard VRRP MIB, adding vendor-specific virtual-router redundancy features to Ethernet Routing Switches. It exposes configuration and operational state for VRRP enhancements: whether VRRP and ping-based virtual-address checking are enabled, critical-IP-address tracking, and hold-down timer behavior that delays a router resuming master role after recovery. It is a redundancy/failover monitoring MIB: bsveVrrpOperExtHoldDownState and bsveVrrpOperExtHoldDownTimeRemaining reveal whether a switch is in a hold-down period (a transitional software state after a fault) before reclaiming master duties, and bsveVrrpOperExtCriticalIpAddrEnabled/bsveVrrpOperExtCriticalIpAddr expose whether the router tracks an upstream IP whose loss would trigger failover. It directly extends and depends on the standard IETF VRRP MIB (RFC 2787) for the base virtual-router objects. It is deployed on pairs or groups of Avaya/Nortel BayStack/ERS switches configured for first-hop redundancy in enterprise or campus networks. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the BAY-STACK-VRRP-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-VRRP-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Avaya/Nortel BayStack and Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) series switches
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls bsveVrrpOperExtHoldDownState and bsveVrrpOperExtHoldDownTimeRemaining on a switch that just recovered from a reboot to confirm it is intentionally delaying its return to VRRP master role rather than assume something is broken. Checking bsveVrrpOperExtCriticalIpAddrEnabled and bsveVrrpOperExtCriticalIpAddr confirms whether the switch tracks a critical upstream gateway, and a failover correlated with bsveVrrpOperExtAction/bsveVrrpOperExtBackUpMasterEnabled reveals whether it reacted to losing reachability to that tracked address. The bsveVrrpOperExtTable entries per virtual-router instance let an admin audit hold-down and critical-IP settings across a whole VRRP-enabled switch stack.
What Can Be Monitored
- VRRP hold-down state and time remaining
- critical IP address tracking status
- VRRP enable/ping-check status
- backup-master action behavior
- per-virtual-router VRRP extension configuration
