Category: Quality of Service, VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Avaya
Description: Manages unicast storm control rate limiting and action configuration on Avaya/Nortel BayStack ERS switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is BAY-STACK-UNICAST-STORM-CONTROL-MIB?
BAY-STACK-UNICAST-STORM-CONTROL-MIB is a proprietary Avaya/Nortel BayStack/ERS extension for rate-limiting unicast traffic storms on switch ports. It exposes configuration objects (global enable, low/high watermarks, poll and trap intervals) and a per-interface table tracking whether storm control is enabled on each port. Its monitoring value is watching per-port unicast traffic load against configured watermarks to detect a storm condition -- unusually heavy unknown/flooded unicast traffic that can indicate a switching loop or a malfunctioning NIC threatening switch CPU and uplink performance. It works alongside standard IF-MIB interface indices and raises its own SNMP notifications when thresholds are crossed. It is typically deployed on Avaya/Nortel Ethernet Routing Switches at the access layer to protect the switch fabric from unicast flooding. Engineers can download the BAY-STACK-UNICAST-STORM-CONTROL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-UNICAST-STORM-CONTROL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Avaya/Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch (BayStack/ERS series)
Monitoring Examples
Polling bsUnicastStormControlIfTable/bsUnicastStormControlIfEntry by bsUnicastStormControlIfIndex shows whether bsUnicastStormControlIfEnabled is active on a port, while bsUnicastStormControlPollValue compared against bsUnicastStormControlLowWatermark/HighWatermark reveals how close that port's unicast traffic is to a storm condition. A poll value repeatedly exceeding the high watermark, combined with a trap fired per bsUnicastStormControlTrapInterval, indicates a switching loop or flooding end-station on that port.
What Can Be Monitored
- unicast storm control enable state
- traffic poll value per port
- low/high watermark thresholds
- poll interval
- trap notification interval
