Description: Manages port mirroring (SPAN) configuration and monitor session assignments on Avaya/Nortel ERS switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is BAY-STACK-PORT-MIRRORING-MIB?
This MIB module manages port mirroring (SPAN) configuration on Avaya/Nortel BayStack and Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) devices, part of the Nortel Networks proprietary MIB family for enterprise LAN switches. It exposes configuration-oriented data such as mirroring session mode, source port lists, the monitor/destination port assignment, and MAC-address-based mirroring filters, rather than raw traffic counters. Administrators use it to monitor the software configuration status of diagnostic tooling on the switch, confirming whether a mirror session is currently active and correctly targeted, since row-status objects reveal whether a session has been created, is running, or has failed to activate. It relies on the standard ifIndex convention (as used across IF-MIB) for identifying the source and monitor ports involved. It's typically deployed in enterprise wiring closets and data centers where network engineers attach protocol analyzers or IDS/IPS sensors to a SPAN port on a Nortel/Avaya switch. Engineers can download the BAY-STACK-PORT-MIRRORING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-PORT-MIRRORING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Avaya/Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS)
- Nortel BayStack switch
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll bsPortMirroringCtrlTable's bsPortMirroringCtrlPortMode and bsPortMirroringCtrlMonitorPort to confirm which port is receiving mirrored traffic and in what mode. Checking bsPortMirroringCtrlRowStatus reveals whether a configured mirror session is active or has been unexpectedly removed, while bsPortMirroringCtrlPortListX/Y show which source ports are being mirrored, catching a misconfiguration where the wrong port set is being captured. bsPortMirroringCtrlAllowTraffic indicates whether the monitor port still passes normal traffic, useful for validating a passive tap setup.
What Can Be Monitored
- port mirroring session mode
- monitor (destination) port assignment
- mirrored source port list
- MAC-address mirroring filters
- mirror session row status/state
