Description: Manages IP forwarding next-hop table entries and routing policy on Avaya/Nortel BayStack ERS switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is BAY-STACK-IP-FWD-NH-MIB?
BAY-STACK-IP-FWD-NH-MIB is a Nortel/Avaya enterprise module managing IP forwarding next-hop table entries and policy-based routing on BayStack ERS (Ethernet Routing Switch) devices. Its data is primarily configuration -- an admin/operational enable flag for the next-hop forwarding feature and a policy table matching traffic by address/mask/port range and directing it to a configured next-hop address. For monitoring purposes it lets an operator confirm that policy-based-routing rules are enabled and actively applied as intended, since bsifnIpForwardingNextHopOperEnabled diverging from the admin setting bsifnIpForwardingNextHopAdminEnabled would indicate the feature failed to activate, and bayStackIpFwdNhNotifications would alert on related faults. It builds on standard IP addressing textual conventions (InetAddressType/InetAddress) and complements the switch's core routing MIBs. It is deployed on Avaya/Nortel BayStack and Ethernet Routing Switch platforms in enterprise networks using policy-based routing for traffic engineering. Engineers can download the BAY-STACK-IP-FWD-NH-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-IP-FWD-NH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Avaya/Nortel BayStack and Ethernet Routing Switches
Monitoring Examples
An admin would check bsifnIpForwardingNextHopAdminEnabled against bsifnIpForwardingNextHopOperEnabled to confirm policy-based next-hop forwarding is actually running as configured, and then walk bsifnPolicyTable/bsifnPolicyEntry to review each bsifnPolicyName's match criteria (bsifnPolicyMatchInetAddressType, bsifnPolicyMatchInetAddress, bsifnPolicyMatchInetAddressMask, bsifnPolicyMatchPortMin/PortMax) against its configured bsifnPolicySetNextHopInetAddressType next-hop target. If oper-enabled state falls out of sync with admin-enabled state, or a bayStackIpFwdNhNotifications trap fires, that signals the policy routing feature has failed to apply on the switch. This is primarily a configuration/verification check rather than a high-frequency performance counter poll.
What Can Be Monitored
- next-hop forwarding admin vs operational state
- policy-based routing match rules
- configured next-hop address per policy
- policy routing fault notifications
