Description: Provides error message logging and severity configuration for Avaya/Nortel BayStack ERS switch events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BAY-STACK-ERROR-MESSAGE-MIB?

BAY-STACK-ERROR-MESSAGE-MIB is a Nortel/Avaya proprietary MIB providing a general error-message logging facility for BayStack ERS switches. It exposes an error message table keyed by a request ID, with source address and address type, and the error message string itself. This module is directly aimed at fault and software-status monitoring: it lets an administrator retrieve human-readable error strings logged by the switch's internal software, revealing operational faults or misbehaving requests without needing device-specific decoding. It is a general-purpose BayStack extension not tied to a specific standard MIB dependency beyond basic addressing types. It is deployed across Avaya/Nortel ERS switch fleets where centralized collection of switch-generated error text aids troubleshooting. Engineers can download the BAY-STACK-ERROR-MESSAGE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAY-STACK-ERROR-MESSAGE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Avaya/Nortel BayStack Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll bsemErrorMessageTable/bsemErrorMessageEntry and read bsemErrorMessageString entries associated with a given bsemErrorMessageRequestId to see what error text the switch logged for a failed operation, using bsemErrorMessageAddress/bsemErrorMessageAddressType to identify the source. A growing number of entries with a particular error string would indicate a recurring software fault worth escalating.

What Can Be Monitored

  • logged error message text
  • error request ID
  • error source address
  • count/frequency of error log entries
