What Is BAS-ALIAS-IP-MIB?

BAS-ALIAS-IP-MIB is a vendor-specific module for Broadband Access Systems (BAS) CMTS cable broadband platforms, defining IP alias addressing and IP-layer statistics for a chassis cluster. It exposes per-alias IP configuration such as forwarding mode and default TTL, alongside IP-layer performance counters including inbound receives, header/address errors, discards, forwarded datagrams, and ICMP-related counters. As primarily a traffic/performance counter MIB, rising basIpInHdrErrors, basIpInAddrErrors, or basIpInDiscards act as a software-health indicator, flagging malformed traffic or misconfiguration on the CMTS's routing stack. It closely parallels the standard IP-MIB (RFC 1213 ipGroup) structure, adapted for CMTS alias addressing. It is typically deployed in cable operator head-ends managing DOCSIS CMTS chassis clusters. Engineers can download the BAS-ALIAS-IP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would monitor basIpInReceives against basIpInDiscards and basIpInHdrErrors on basIpTable/basIpEntry for a given alias to spot a spike in malformed packets pointing at a misbehaving cable modem or upstream noise. basIpForwDatagrams and basIpOutRequests give visibility into forwarding load on the alias interface, while basIpInUnknownProtos and the basIcmp counters flag unexpected protocol traffic or ICMP errors on the same alias.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using basIpInReceives OID:

Select a Broadband Access Systems CMTS router as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type basIpInReceives into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of input datagrams received from interfaces, including those received in error. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
