Category: Network Monitoring (RMON), Vendor: Axis Communications

Description: Monitors Axis Communications IP video surveillance cameras, covering stream status, motion detection, and camera health.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is AXIS-VIDEO-MIB?

AXIS-VIDEO-MIB is Axis Communications' enterprise MIB for its network IP video surveillance cameras and encoders, covering both video-specific functions and general device hardware health. Per its module description it explicitly includes hardware resource objects such as power supplies, fans, and temperature sensors, plus video-related objects and notifications. It is squarely aimed at monitoring hardware status -- power supply presence/type/status, fan presence/type/status, and temperature sensor readings -- with traps that notify a management station the moment one of these fails, alongside separate video-stream/service objects. This module is Axis's own private-enterprise tree rather than a derivative of a broader video-surveillance standard. It is deployed in security and surveillance environments where IP cameras or video encoders need centralized health monitoring alongside the video feeds they produce. Engineers can download the AXIS-VIDEO-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AXIS-VIDEO-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Axis Communications network cameras
  • Axis video encoders

Monitoring Examples

A monitoring system polls powerSupplyTable/powerSupplyEntry for powerSupplyStatus per powerSupplyId to detect a failed or missing PSU, and similarly polls fanTable/fanEntry for fanStatus to catch a stalled cooling fan before the unit overheats. The tempSensorTable exposes per-sensor temperature readings so an admin can catch a camera enclosure running hot, and the videoNotifications group fires SNMP traps automatically the instant a power, fan, or temperature fault occurs rather than waiting for the next poll.

What Can Be Monitored

  • power supply presence and status
  • fan presence and status
  • temperature sensor readings
  • video stream/service status
  • hardware fault traps

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using powerSupplyStatus OID:

Select an Axis Communications network camera or video encoder as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type powerSupplyStatus into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The status of a power supply. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'ok', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
