What Is ATM-FORUM-MIB?

ATM-FORUM-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB defined by the ATM Forum industry consortium for managing ATM network interfaces, ports, and virtual circuits across compliant equipment from any manufacturer. It exposes objects covering physical/logical ATM port identity and addressing, transmission and media type, operational status, and mappings to IP/OSI network-management addresses used to reach the device. Its monitoring value is primarily interface and connectivity health: administrators poll atmfPortOperStatus to detect a down ATM port and cross-reference atmfPortTransmissionType/atmfPortMediaType against expected configuration to catch a cabling or media mismatch, while the NSAP/IP address objects support network-layer reachability checks rather than deep hardware sensor data. As the baseline ATM Forum standard, it is commonly extended or paralleled by vendor-specific MIBs (such as ATM-ADAPTER-MIB) that add hardware-specific detail on top of these standard objects. It is deployed across any ATM-capable switch, router, or adapter historically used in carrier and enterprise ATM backbone networks. Engineers can download the ATM-FORUM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll atmfPortTable/atmfPortEntry rows by atmfPortIndex, checking atmfPortOperStatus for each ATM port and comparing atmfPortAddress and atmfMyIpNmAddress/atmfMyOsiNmNsapAddress to confirm correct network-management addressing. A port reporting atmfPortOperStatus as down while atmfPortMyIfName still shows it as the expected uplink interface would flag an unexpected ATM link failure needing investigation.
