What Is ATM-ADAPTER-MIB?

ATM-ADAPTER-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from IBM covering its ATM network adapter cards, which provide ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network connectivity in IBM host and networking equipment. It exposes hardware inventory and performance objects for each adapter, including serial number, diagnostic and software/firmware version, transmit/receive buffer sizes, transmission type, and media type, alongside SAR (segmentation and reassembly) and cell-level traffic statistics. Its monitoring value is squarely hardware/software status: administrators use atmfAdapterSerialNumber and atmfAdapterSoftwareVersion/atmfAdapterDiagVersion to inventory and validate firmware levels across adapters, while buffer-size and transmission-type objects combined with muxatmTrap notifications help detect a misconfigured or failing adapter. It builds on the ATM Forum's standard interface conventions (paralleling ATM-FORUM-MIB concepts) while adding IBM-specific adapter hardware detail. It is deployed in IBM host systems and network devices equipped with ATM adapter cards, common in legacy enterprise ATM backbone and mainframe-attached networking environments, and this ATM-ADAPTER-MIB reference is commonly consulted to identify adapter hardware inventory and firmware version objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ATM-ADAPTER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM ATM network adapter card (host/network equipment)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll atmfAdapterTable/atmfAdapterEntry rows keyed by atmfAdapterIndex to check each adapter's atmfAdapterSerialNumber, atmfAdapterSoftwareVersion, and atmfAdapterDiagVersion for consistency across a fleet, and watch atmfAdapterTransmitBufSize/atmfAdapterReceiveBufSize alongside cell statistics for buffer exhaustion. A muxatmTrap firing alongside a mismatched atmfAdapterMediaType would reveal a physical-layer or media-type misconfiguration on that specific ATM adapter.

What Can Be Monitored

  • adapter serial number
  • adapter software/firmware version
  • diagnostic version
  • transmit/receive buffer size
  • transmission and media type
  • adapter fault traps
