Organization: Allied Telesis, Inc
Last Updated: 2006-06-28
Category: Routing Protocols, Vendor: Allied Telesis
Description: Provides SNMP-triggered ICMP ping test capability with configurable target, packet count, and result reporting on Allied Telesis devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is AT-PING-MIB?
AT-PING-MIB is Allied Telesis's private MIB implementing an SNMP-triggered ICMP ping test facility, allowing a management station to remotely initiate connectivity tests from the device itself. It exposes a ping request/result table where an operator configures target address, packet count, packet size, delay, and type-of-service, then reads back status and statistics once the test completes, with optional trap notification on completion. This is a software-driven diagnostic tool rather than hardware health monitoring - it lets an administrator verify network reachability and round-trip behavior from the perspective of the managed device itself. It relies on standard ICMP concepts but is implemented as an Allied Telesis enterprise MIB rather than a published IETF ping MIB (though conceptually similar to DISMAN-PING-MIB). It is used in Allied Telesis switch/router deployments for remote network diagnostics without needing direct device access. Engineers can download the AT-PING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AT-PING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Allied Telesis switch/router
Monitoring Examples
An administrator creates an entry in pingTable/pingEntry specifying pingAddress, pingNumberOfPackets, and pingPacketSize, then monitors pingStatus and pingStatistics to determine round-trip success or failure, optionally receiving a pingTraps notification via pingTrapOnCompletion. If pingStatistics shows high packet loss or the pingStatus indicates timeout, this reveals a reachability problem between the device and the target address, useful for confirming whether a downstream link or remote host is actually unreachable versus a local interface fault.
What Can Be Monitored
- ping test target address
- packet count and size configuration
- ping delay/timeout setting
- ping test completion status
- ping round-trip statistics
