What Is ASCEND-WAN-MIB?
ASCEND-WAN-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB module from Ascend Communications (later part of Lucent/Avaya) covering WAN interface cards and dial/leased-line access equipment. It exposes configuration objects for WAN link encapsulation type, line framing, and per-link performance counters such as frame/packet error rates. In a monitoring context it is used to track the operational status and throughput health of WAN interfaces, surfacing link-down conditions, encapsulation mismatches, and error-rate anomalies that indicate a failing WAN circuit or misconfigured link. Loading ASCEND-WAN-MIB in a MIB Browser alongside the standard IF-MIB makes it straightforward to correlate WAN-specific encapsulation and error objects with their underlying ifTable entries. It builds on the standard IF-MIB interface model, adding Ascend-specific extensions layered over ifTable entries for WAN ports. It is typically deployed on Ascend/Lucent MAX, Pipeline, or TNT-series remote access concentrators used by ISPs and enterprises for dial-up and leased-line WAN aggregation.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-WAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll the WAN link table (indexed similarly to ifTable) to check the configured encapsulation (PPP, Frame Relay) against the negotiated encapsulation, and watch per-link error and retransmission counters for a spike that signals line noise or a carrier problem. A sudden change in a link's operational status object combined with rising CRC error counts would indicate a failing leased line or bad channel bank connection.
