Category: Routing Protocols, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Manages BGP peer configuration, routing policies, and session statistics on Ascend equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-MIBBGP-MIB?

This proprietary Ascend Communications MIB manages Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) peer configuration, routing policies, and session statistics on Ascend routing/access equipment. It exposes configuration data for BGP peers and routing policy, along with session-level statistics such as counts of routes and protocol events. It is used for monitoring the software routing status of the device — an operator checks BGP peer session state to confirm peerings are established and stable, and watches session statistics for route flapping or unexpected drops, which often indicate a routing or connectivity problem upstream. It reflects the standard IETF BGP-4 protocol even though implemented as an Ascend-proprietary MIB rather than the IETF BGP4-MIB. It was deployed on legacy Ascend/Lucent routers and access equipment participating in BGP-based internet or enterprise routing. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ASCEND-MIBBGP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-MIBBGP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • legacy Ascend router/access equipment

Monitoring Examples

No specific object or table names were included in the sampled instrumentation for this module, so a concrete polling example can't be tied to real OIDs; in general, an operator would poll BGP peer session state and route/session statistics to confirm peerings remain established, investigating a peer that flaps between up and down states or a sudden drop in received route counts as signs of a routing or link problem.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BGP peer session state
  • routing policy configuration
  • route/session statistics
  • peer flap events
