Description: ARRIS C3 CMTS service module inventory and operational status management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ARRIS-C3-SM-MIB?

ARRIS-C3-SM-MIB is an ARRIS International proprietary MIB (registered under cmtsC3 as cmtsSMMIB) that manages the System Manager software on the Arris CMTS C3 cable modem termination system. Its dcxSMBootGroup controls the chassis's primary boot source (dcxSMBootDevice: nfs/tftp/ftp/diskAlternative/diskCurrent), the boot server address and credentials (dcxSMBootHostname, dcxSMBootUsername, dcxSMBootPassword, dcxSMBootPath), the management interface mode (dcxSMEnetMgmtInterface: out-of-band vs in-band), and a write-only reboot trigger (dcxSMRebootAction); a parallel dcxSMConfigFileBootGroup defines the equivalent source, server, and path objects for loading the CMTS's configuration file, and dcxSMDownloadGroup covers image download configuration. Because these are all system-management/provisioning objects rather than DOCSIS traffic counters, monitoring this MIB mainly confirms which boot device and server a C3 chassis is configured to use, which matters for diagnosing a CMTS that fails to reload its image or configuration after a reboot. It depends on the parent ARRIS-MIB for the cmtsC3 enterprise branch it is registered under. It is deployed on Arris (Cadant) C3 CMTS chassis in cable operator head-ends, and ARRIS-C3-SM-MIB SNMP monitoring of the boot and config-file source settings is a standard pre-maintenance check before a scheduled reload.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ARRIS-C3-SM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ARRIS (Cadant) C3 CMTS chassis

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls dcxSMBootDevice and dcxSMBootHostname before a planned CMTS reload to confirm the chassis is pointed at the correct TFTP server and image path, and checks dcxSMConfigFileBootPath separately; a mismatch between the expected and configured dcxSMBootHostname would explain a C3 chassis coming up with a stale or wrong software image after reboot.

What Can Be Monitored

  • boot device/server/path configuration
  • boot server authentication credentials
  • management interface mode (in-band vs out-of-band)
  • configuration-file boot device/server/path
  • software image download configuration
  • reboot trigger state
