Description: Apache HTTP server performance monitoring including request rates, worker status, and uptime.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is APACHE-MIB?
APACHE-MIB is a vendor-neutral application-monitoring MIB, originally developed under the EU Joint Research Centre enterprise branch, for the Apache HTTP web server software. It exposes application-level performance data such as request rates, worker/process status, and server uptime rather than any physical hardware attributes. Its monitoring value is squarely on software status: tracking how many worker processes/threads are busy versus idle, request throughput, and how long the Apache process has been running (uptime), which together reveal overload conditions or an unexpected restart. It is a self-contained application MIB under the jointResearchCentre enterprise tree, generally implemented via an SNMP subagent/extension rather than depending on other standard MIBs. It is deployed on Linux/Unix servers running Apache HTTP Server where administrators want SNMP-based visibility into web server health alongside standard host monitoring. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the APACHE-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in APACHE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB for servers running Apache HTTP Server, not tied to a specific hardware manufacturer
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll objects under apacheMIBObjects to read Apache's current worker status counts and request-rate figures, watching for a spike in busy workers approaching the server's configured MaxClients limit, which signals the server is close to refusing new connections. A sudden reset of the reported Apache uptime value indicates the httpd process crashed and restarted, which combined with a request-rate drop would explain a corresponding outage reported by users. This scenario is grounded in the MIB's stated purpose since only top-level object identifiers were provided as samples.
What Can Be Monitored
- Apache server uptime
- worker/process busy vs idle count
- request rate/throughput
- server restart events
