What Is ALTIGA-SESSION-STATS-MIB?

ALTIGA-SESSION-STATS-MIB originates from Altiga Networks, acquired by Cisco to become the Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrator series, and it provides real-time statistics on active VPN sessions handled by the appliance. It exposes counters and gauges for active and total session counts, breaking them down by session type -- LAN-to-LAN, remote-access, management, WebVPN, and NAC-accepted sessions -- along with the configured maximum session limits and a weighted session count used for licensing/capacity purposes. This is fundamentally a software/capacity health MIB: administrators monitor it to see how close the concentrator is to its licensed or configured maximum session count, spot unusual spikes in a particular session type, and confirm the timestamp of the last update to the session statistics to ensure the counters are current. As a VPN-specific MIB it complements Cisco's broader VPN 3000 MIB family covering interface and hardware status rather than duplicating it. It is deployed on Cisco VPN 3000 Series Concentrators (formerly Altiga) used for remote-access and site-to-site VPN termination, monitored via the ALTIGA-SESSION-STATS-MIB MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ALTIGA-SESSION-STATS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll alActiveSessionCount against alActiveSessionMaxUsers to see how close the concentrator is to its licensed session ceiling, and break usage down further via alActiveLanToLanSessionCount, alActiveRemoteAccessSessionCount, and alActiveManagementSessionCount to identify which session type is driving load. Checking alActiveSessionLastUpdate confirms the statistics are refreshing as expected, while alWeightedSessionCount gives a licensing-weighted view of load that differs from a simple session count. A sustained alActiveSessionCount near alMaxSessionCount would signal it's time to add capacity or investigate an unusual surge in remote-access connections.
