Description: Alcatel OmniSwitch PIM Bootstrap Router MIB for managing BSR candidates, RP sets, and multicast group-to-RP mappings.

Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ALCATEL-IND1-PIM-BSR-MIB?

ALCATEL-IND1-PIM-BSR-MIB is an Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise proprietary MIB for the OmniSwitch "Birds Of Prey" product line implementing the PIM Bootstrap Router (BSR) mechanism, based on the IETF PIM BSR internet-draft, which dynamically distributes Rendezvous Point (RP) information to PIM routers for multicast group-to-RP mapping. It exposes a candidate-RP table listing each candidate RP's address, associated multicast group address/prefix, bidirectional-PIM flag, priority, advertisement interval/timer, and holdtime, along with BSR-related notifications. For device status monitoring it lets an administrator confirm which RP candidates are advertising for a given multicast group, check advertisement timers and priorities to predict RP election outcomes, and detect a misconfigured or missing candidate RP that would leave a multicast group without a working RP. It is Alcatel's implementation of the IETF draft-ietf-pim-bsr-mib, layered under the standard PIM-MIB framework. It is typically deployed on Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch routers participating in PIM sparse-mode multicast routing in enterprise networks requiring dynamic RP discovery. Engineers can download the ALCATEL-IND1-PIM-BSR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ALCATEL-IND1-PIM-BSR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch (Birds Of Prey product line) multicast router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk alaPimBsrCandidateRPTable/alaPimBsrCandidateRPEntry to check alaPimBsrCandidateRPPriority and alaPimBsrCandidateRPGroupAddress for each candidate RP, confirming the expected router is positioned to win RP election for a given multicast group range, and check alaPimBsrCandidateRPHoldtime/alaPimBsrCandidateRPAdvInterval for timer consistency. A candidate RP missing from the table, or an alaPimBsrCandidateRPStatus showing inactive, would indicate that group's multicast traffic could fail to find a Rendezvous Point.

What Can Be Monitored

  • candidate RP address and priority
  • RP group address/prefix mapping
  • BSR advertisement interval/timer
  • candidate RP holdtime
  • bidirectional PIM flag

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using alaPimBsrCandidateRPAdvTimer OID:

Select an Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise OmniSwitch switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type alaPimBsrCandidateRPAdvTimer into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The time remaining before the local router next sends a Candidate-RP-Advertisement to the elected BSR for this address type. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a TimeTicks-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value stays unexpectedly high or low relative to what you'd expect for this timer, since that can indicate a stuck or stale state. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
