Category: RMON

Description: Tracks peak alarm thresholds for 3Com RMON probes to detect traffic spikes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is A3COM0028-ALARM-PEAK?

A3COM0028-ALARM-PEAK is a small private 3Com extension to standard RMON alarm functionality, adding a peak-value tracking capability to RMON alarm entries so that the highest observed value during an alarm's sampling interval is recorded, not just the last sample. It exposes an extension table that augments the standard RMON alarmTable with a peak-value object per alarm entry. Its monitoring purpose is squarely about detecting transient performance anomalies: it lets an operator see the worst-case (peak) traffic or error level a monitored variable reached, catching short-lived spikes that a simple threshold-crossing sample might otherwise miss between polls. It is explicitly an extension of the standard RFC 2819 RMON MIB's alarm mechanism and cannot be used meaningfully without that base RMON alarm configuration in place. It is deployed on 3Com switches with embedded RMON probes used for traffic-spike and threshold-based alarm detection. Engineers can download the A3COM0028-ALARM-PEAK file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in A3COM0028-ALARM-PEAK. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • 3Com switches with embedded RMON probes (legacy, 3Com now part of HP)

Monitoring Examples

An operator correlates alarmExtTable/alarmExtEntry's alarmPeakValue against the base RMON alarmTable entry it extends, seeing that a monitored interface's error or utilization counter spiked well above the configured alarm threshold momentarily even though the sampled value at alarm-trigger time looked only marginally high. This peak value helps distinguish a brief traffic burst from a sustained overload condition on the monitored port or variable.

What Can Be Monitored

  • peak value of an RMON-monitored variable
  • traffic/error spikes between poll intervals
