Description: Monitors ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) virtual circuit statistics and error counters on H3C devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is A3COM-HUAWEI-AAL5-MIB?

A3COM-HUAWEI-AAL5-MIB is an H3C (formerly 3Com/Huawei) proprietary module supplementing standard ATM management by exposing ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) virtual-circuit information that the module_desc explicitly notes is excluded from RFC 1695, the standard AToM MIB. It exposes per-VCC traffic counters and connection state for ATM virtual circuits configured on the device. This is a monitoring MIB in the classic sense of tracking software/protocol status: per-VCC packet and octet counters reveal throughput trends, while h3cAal5VccState directly reports whether a given virtual circuit is up, down, or in another operational state, letting operators catch failed circuits quickly. Dependency: it explicitly complements the IETF RFC 1695 ATM MIB rather than replacing it. Typical deployment is on H3C/3Com ATM-capable WAN edge routers or switches carrying legacy ATM PVC traffic. Engineers can download the A3COM-HUAWEI-AAL5-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in A3COM-HUAWEI-AAL5-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H3C/3Com ATM-capable routers and switches

Monitoring Examples

Polling h3cAal5VccTable (indexed by h3cAal5VccVpi and h3cAal5VccVci) lets an admin track h3cAal5VccInPkts/h3cAal5VccOutPkts and h3cAal5VccInOctets/h3cAal5VccOutOctets to baseline throughput on a given AAL5 virtual circuit. A sudden change in h3cAal5VccState from active to a down or inactive state would flag a failed VC that RFC 1695 alone might not surface with H3C-specific fidelity, prompting investigation into the underlying ATM PVC.

What Can Be Monitored

  • AAL5 VCC inbound/outbound packet counts
  • AAL5 VCC inbound/outbound octet counts
  • VCC operational state
  • VPI/VCI circuit identification

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using h3cAal5VccInPkts OID:

Select an H3C/3Com ATM-capable router as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type h3cAal5VccInPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of AAL5 CPCS PDUs received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
