Category: Storage and NAS, Web and Application Services

Description: Provides Veritas SNMP management objects for monitoring storage and backup software components and job status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VRTS-SNMP-MIBv1?

VRTS-SNMP-MIBv1 is Veritas's (NetBackup/VxVM) SNMP module for monitoring enterprise backup and storage management software, covering tape media inventory, backup media/pool status, and top-level branches for the broader NetBackup and Veritas Volume Manager product areas. It exposes data about physical/virtual backup media — tape cartridges, robotic tape libraries, and media pools. In monitoring terms it is used to track both the software and hardware status of backup infrastructure: which media are loaded in which robot slot, media retention levels, and tape sizes, letting an admin verify backup job media availability and detect tape library hardware issues such as a jammed or mis-slotted cartridge. It is a vendor-specific extension built on standard SNMP SMI conventions rather than one of the IETF host/storage MIBs, though it can be deployed alongside standard host-resources MIBs for fuller system visibility. It is typically deployed in enterprise data centers running Veritas/NetBackup backup servers with attached tape robotic libraries. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the VRTS-SNMP-MIBv1 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VRTS-SNMP-MIBv1. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Veritas NetBackup backup server
  • tape robotic library/media changer used with NetBackup

Monitoring Examples

Polling mediaTable (mediaEntry indexed by mediaIndex) and inspecting mediaPool, mediaId, and mediaType lets an admin confirm which tape cartridges are assigned to which backup pool and catch a media type mismatch. mediaRobotType, mediaRobotNum, and mediaRobotSlot identify exactly where a given tape sits within a robotic tape library, useful for diagnosing a mis-slotted or stuck cartridge. mediaRetLevel and mediaSize expose retention-level and capacity data so an operator can spot media nearing end-of-retention or an undersized tape causing backup job failures.

What Can Be Monitored

  • tape media pool assignment
  • media/tape identifier and type
  • robot number and slot location
  • media retention level
  • tape/media size/capacity
