Description: Manages Unisphere ERX Common Open Policy Service (COPS) client configuration and server connections.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Unisphere-Data-COPS-MIB?

Unisphere-Data-COPS-MIB is a Unisphere Networks (Juniper ERX) enterprise MIB for managing Common Open Policy Service (COPS) client configuration and monitoring server connections used for policy-based provisioning. It exposes protocol-level counters — sessions created/deleted, current session count, bytes/packets sent and received, and keepalive counts — along with a per-session table detailing client type and connection state. This is a software/protocol status MIB: it lets an operator confirm the COPS policy server connection is healthy, watch for session churn (sessions being created and deleted repeatedly), and verify keepalives are flowing, all of which indicate whether policy-based services on the router are functioning correctly. It depends on the standard COPS protocol (RFC 2748) and is a companion to the Unisphere-Data-COPS-CONF agent-capabilities module. It is typically deployed on Juniper/Unisphere ERX routers that rely on an external COPS policy decision point for QoS or admission control provisioning. Engineers can download the Unisphere-Data-COPS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Unisphere-Data-COPS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper/Unisphere ERX edge router

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll usdCopsProtocolCurrentSessions and usdCopsProtocolSessionsCreated/Deleted to detect abnormal session churn indicating an unstable connection to the policy server. Walking usdCopsProtocolSessionTable/usdCopsProtocolSessionEntry for usdCopsProtocolSessionClientType would confirm which policy client types are active, while a stall in usdCopsProtocolKeepAlivesReceived would signal the COPS server connection has gone silent.

What Can Be Monitored

  • current COPS sessions
  • sessions created/deleted counts
  • bytes and packets sent/received
  • keepalives sent/received
  • per-session client type

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using usdCopsProtocolSessionsCreated OID:

Select a Juniper/Unisphere ERX edge router (COPS session-count/keepalive status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type usdCopsProtocolSessionsCreated into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the total number of COPS protocol sessions created. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
