Category: Network Security and UTM

Description: Manages unified threat management firewall, IPS, antivirus, and web filter policy statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is UTM-MIB?

UTM-MIB is a Siemens (Siemens Nixdorf, sni enterprise 231) MIB for openUTM, Siemens' Universal Transaction Monitor middleware for BS2000/OSD mainframe and Unix transaction-processing systems — a very different product from the "Unified Threat Management" firewall/IPS category the name might suggest, and administrators should not confuse the two. The module models a UTM application table (name, up/down status, shared-memory key/segment size, semaphore ID, home directory) and a rich statistics group mirroring the output of the KDCINF STATISTICS operator command: cold-start time, terminal message throughput, current tasks and connected users, dialog/asynchronous conversation counts and transaction rates, page-pool occupancy and cache hit rate, deadlocks, periodic writes, and job-receiving conversation peaks. It further exposes system parameter tables (accounting, SM2 feed, test mode, resource-wait timeouts, max tasks) and detailed session-object tables for physical terminals (utmPtermTable), logical terminals (utmLtermTable), transaction codes and TAC classes (utmTacTable, utmTacclassTable), logged-in users (utmUserTable), inter-application connections (utmConTable), and LU6.1 remote-application links (utmLpapTable), each carrying connection/lock status, usage counters, and security-violation counts. This gives an operator deep visibility into openUTM application health, transaction throughput, and terminal/session state on the underlying mainframe or Unix host. It is deployed on Siemens/Fujitsu BS2000-OSD mainframes and Unix systems running openUTM, and administrators can look up the UTM-MIB when monitoring openUTM transaction-processing applications.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in UTM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Siemens/Fujitsu BS2000-OSD mainframes and Unix hosts running openUTM

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls utmStatCurrTasks and utmStatDeadlocks in utmStatData to check for resource contention on a running UTM application, and cross-references utmTacTable's utmTacInq (queued messages) and utmTacError (failed program-unit runs) for a specific transaction code; a TAC showing a growing utmTacInq alongside rising utmTacError counts would point to a stuck or failing program unit backing up transaction throughput for the whole application.

What Can Be Monitored

  • UTM application up/down status
  • current tasks, connected users, and transaction rates
  • page-pool occupancy and cache hit rate
  • transaction-code (TAC) queue depth and error counts
  • physical/logical terminal connection and security-violation counts
