Category: Network Security and UTM
Description: Monitors Blue Coat proxy appliance traffic utilization, policy hits, and bandwidth consumption.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is USAGE-MIB?
USAGE-MIB is a Blue Coat Systems proxy appliance MIB used to monitor general device resource usage rather than a single fixed metric, per its description as covering "resource usage of the device." It exposes a device usage table with named usage items, each carrying a current percentage, a configurable high-threshold, a status, and a timestamp, plus trap-enable controls and notification objects. This makes it a broad hardware/software status MIB: named usage entries commonly correspond to things like CPU load, memory utilization, or disk usage on the proxy appliance, and the status/high-threshold/trap fields let an operator get proactively alerted when any tracked resource exceeds its configured limit. No explicit dependency on other MIBs is stated. It is deployed on Blue Coat (now Symantec/Broadcom) proxy/caching appliances in enterprise web-security gateways. Engineers can download the USAGE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in USAGE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Blue Coat proxy/caching appliance
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would walk deviceUsageTable/deviceUsageEntry (indexed by deviceUsageIndex) to read deviceUsageName alongside deviceUsagePercent for each tracked resource, comparing it to the configured deviceUsageHigh threshold and deviceUsageStatus to see which resource (e.g., CPU or memory) is currently over-utilized. A deviceUsageTrapEnabled entry combined with a notification from deviceUsageMIBNotifications would alert the admin in real time when deviceUsagePercent crosses its threshold, with deviceUsageTime marking when the condition was last recorded.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-resource usage percentage
- usage high-threshold configuration
- usage status
- trap enable state per resource
- last usage-update timestamp
