What Is TUBS-LINUX-MIB?

TUBS-LINUX-MIB is an experimental MIB from TU Braunschweig's IBR institute that exposes Linux operating system resource and kernel statistics over SNMP, covering CPU activity, kernel BogoMips-style benchmarking data, and general host operating-system parameters. It provides host-level system data comparable in spirit to the standard Host Resources MIB, focused on Linux-specific kernel and CPU information. Its core monitoring value is direct hardware/software host-status visibility: administrators can track CPU load/activity (linuxCPU) and kernel benchmark data (linuxBogo) to gauge processor utilization and detect performance degradation on a Linux host. It is an independent experimental alternative to (rather than a formal extension of) the IETF HOST-RESOURCES-MIB, built for the TU Braunschweig TNM agent framework. It was used in academic SNMP research and Linux SNMP agent development rather than commercial production monitoring. Engineers can download the TUBS-LINUX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the linuxCPU object to obtain current CPU utilization/activity on the monitored Linux host, using linuxBogo as a static reference benchmark value for the machine's processing capacity. A sustained high linuxCPU reading relative to expectations would indicate the host is under heavy load. The linuxAgents branch groups related sub-agent objects reporting on other Linux subsystems covered by the module.
