Description: Defines managed objects for collecting response time data on TN3270 and TN3270E sessions for service level agreement validation.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring TN3270E-RT-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is TN3270E-RT-MIB?

TN3270E-RT-MIB is an IETF standards-based SNMP module defining managed objects for collecting response-time data on TN3270 and TN3270E terminal emulation sessions, used to validate service level agreements for mainframe-access gateways. It exposes a response time collection control table letting a management application configure which types of response-time data are gathered, for which client groups, along with sampling period, threshold high/low values, and statistical bucket boundaries for distribution analysis. Its monitoring purpose is squarely software/service performance oriented: it tracks session response-time distributions and threshold crossings to detect degraded terminal emulation performance experienced by end users, rather than hardware health. It explicitly depends on the companion TN3270E-MIB, importing tn3270eSrvrConfIndex and client group naming conventions from that base module to identify which server and client group a collection entry applies to. It is deployed on TN3270E server gateways in enterprise environments where mainframe terminal access performance must be measured against SLA commitments. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the TN3270E-RT-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN3270E-RT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • TN3270E server/gateway

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll tn3270eRtCollCtlTable, keyed by tn3270eSrvrConfIndex and tn3270eRtCollCtlClientGroupName, to review tn3270eRtCollCtlType and tn3270eRtCollCtlSPeriod for an active response-time collection, and compare tn3270eRtCollCtlThreshHigh/ThreshLow against measured samples. A client group whose response times are frequently landing above tn3270eRtCollCtlThreshHigh, as reflected in the higher tn3270eRtCollCtlBucketBndry buckets, would indicate degraded terminal session performance for that user group, warranting investigation of network path or server load.

What Can Be Monitored

  • response time collection type and sampling period
  • response time threshold high/low crossings
  • response time distribution bucket boundaries
  • client group idle rate

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using tn3270eRtDataTotalRts OID:

Select a device implementing TN3270E-RT-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type tn3270eRtDataTotalRts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The count of the total response times collected. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in tenths of seconds), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
