Category: Security and Access Control

Description: Monitors security flow inspection statistics including connection rates and policy match counts.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SEC-FLOW-MIB?

SEC-FLOW-MIB is a vendor MIB (prefix "nbsAr", tied to an "Accelerouter" product referenced as nbsAccelerouter) for monitoring security-flow inspection state on flow-based security/accelerator networking equipment. It belongs to the network-security/flow-inspection management category, exposing a per-flow table tracking flow validity, state, last-used timestamp, and associated service/QoS bindings. Its monitoring value is centered on software/service state: nbsArSecFlowState and nbsArSecFlowValid reveal whether a given security flow entry is currently active and legitimate, nbsArSecFlowLastUsedTimestamp indicates flow idle/aging behavior, and nbsArSecFlowNumOfServices together with nbsArSecFlowServId/nbsArSecFlowServTypes show which security services are bound to a flow — useful for confirming policy enforcement and catching stale or anomalous flow entries. No explicit external standards dependency is stated, but it appears tied to the vendor's own flow/QoS framework (nbsArFlowID, nbsArFlowQoSSpec) alongside this security-specific extension. It is deployed on the vendor's security-flow-inspection network appliances (accelerouters) sitting in-line in networks that need per-flow security policy enforcement and rate/QoS control. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SEC-FLOW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SEC-FLOW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • flow-based security/accelerator network appliances (nbsAccelerouter product line)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll nbsArSecFlowTable/nbsArSecFlowEntry, indexed by nbsArSecFlowIndex, checking nbsArSecFlowValid and nbsArSecFlowState for a suspicious connection, and inspect nbsArSecFlowServTypes/nbsArSecFlowServId to see which security services are applied to it. A flow with nbsArSecFlowLastUsedTimestamp far in the past despite nbsArSecFlowValid still being true would indicate a stale flow-table entry not being cleaned up, potentially consuming flow-table capacity. Comparing nbsArSecFlowNumOfServices against the expected policy count for a given flow type helps confirm all intended security services are correctly bound.

What Can Be Monitored

  • security flow validity and state
  • flow last-used/idle timestamp
  • number and type of security services bound to a flow
  • flow QoS specification
