Category: IP and Core Protocols

Description: Defines the Identification MIB for identifying users associated with TCP connections.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring RFC1414-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is RFC1414-MIB?

RFC1414-MIB is the standard IETF MIB (RFC 1414, historic/experimental) implementing the Identification Protocol (RFC 1413, 'ident') as an SNMP-queryable table, correlating a TCP connection with the owning user identity. Its table, keyed by the same indices as the standard tcpConnTable, records status, operating system, character set, user ID, and miscellaneous ident-protocol information for every active TCP connection. As a status MIB it lets an administrator identify which local user owns a specific TCP connection without needing a separate ident query. It is deployed on systems implementing RFC 1414 alongside the standard MIB-II TCP connection table. Engineers can download the RFC1414-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RFC1414-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Systems implementing RFC 1414 (ident-over-SNMP)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator cross-references identUserid against tcpConnState for a specific connection to identify which local user owns it via RFC1414-MIB.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-TCP-connection user identity
