Description: Compatibility stub for RFC 1286, the pre-RFC-1493 bridge management MIB, supplying MacAddress, BridgeId, and Timeout textual conventions to legacy-dependent MIBs like R2000-MIB
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RFC1286?
RFC1286 is a legacy IETF stub MIB module that predates the formal STD 1493 Bridge MIB, defined for early bridge/switch management on 802.1D compliant devices. Rather than defining monitorable objects of its own, it supplies shared textual conventions such as MacAddress, BridgeId, and Timeout that other, newer bridge-related MIB modules import and depend on. Because it contains no runtime data objects, it is not used directly to poll hardware or software health; instead it enables compatibility so that legacy or vendor MIBs (like R2000-MIB) that still reference these older type definitions can compile and load correctly. Its main dependency relationship is with the historical bridge management MIB lineage (RFC 1286 to RFC 1493/1525 to the IEEE 802.1D Bridge MIB). It is typically encountered only indirectly, pulled in as an IMPORTS dependency defined in the RFC1286 RFC when parsing older enterprise or bridge-related MIB trees, rather than being polled on its own.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RFC1286. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- legacy 802.1D network bridges/switches
Monitoring Examples
This module defines only textual conventions (MacAddress, BridgeId, Timeout) and contains no tables or scalar objects to poll. There is no monitoring scenario to describe because it exposes no runtime data; its sole function is to be imported by other MIBs needing these type definitions. An admin would never query RFC1286 directly; instead, tools like a MIB compiler resolve it silently when loading dependent bridge MIBs.
