Description: Documents Ericsson SmartEdge SNMP agent capabilities for the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol MIB on SmartEdge series BRAS.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-RSTP-CAP?

RBN-RSTP-CAP is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module published by Ericsson (formerly Redback Networks) for its SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router, SM Metro Ethernet Service Transport, and Smart Service Router (SSR) product families, describing how those platforms implement the standard RSTP-MIB (RFC 4318) for Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol. Rather than exposing its own runtime data, it documents which groups, objects, and variations of the RSTP-MIB are supported (or restricted) on a given SEOS software release, effectively acting as a conformance statement layered on top of that IETF MIB. As such it does not directly expose device health data like uptime, temperature, CPU/memory, or power/fan status; instead it indirectly supports monitoring by telling a management station which RSTP spanning-tree state and topology-change objects it can rely on when polling the device. It is explicitly dependent on and only meaningful in conjunction with the standard RSTP-MIB from RFC 4318, which it profiles for Ericsson/Redback hardware. It is deployed alongside the base RSTP-MIB on carrier-grade SmartEdge BRAS and metro Ethernet platforms to inform NMS tooling of supported spanning-tree capabilities per SEOS release. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the RBN-RSTP-CAP file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-RSTP-CAP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER)
  • SmartEdge SM Metro Ethernet platform
  • Smart Service Router (SSR)

Monitoring Examples

As an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module, RBN-RSTP-CAP defines no tables or runtime objects of its own (sample_objects is empty) -- it only cross-references object groups from the standard RSTP-MIB via SUPPORTS clauses. A network engineer would not poll this MIB directly; instead, NMS software would consult it offline to determine, for a given Ericsson SEOS release, whether objects like dot1dStpPortState or topology-change traps from RSTP-MIB are implemented on that SmartEdge/SSR platform. There is no monitoring scenario to describe beyond this conformance-declaration role.
