Description: Configures Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol for gateway redundancy on Marvell switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RADLAN-VRRP?

RADLAN-VRRP is a vendor-specific private MIB from RADLAN/Marvell implementing VRRPv3, the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol, which provides gateway redundancy by letting a group of routers share a virtual IP address with automatic failover. It exposes an operations table (rlVrrpv3OperationsTable/Entry) with per-virtual-router objects such as administrative state, VRRP version, master election priority (rlVrrpv3OperationsMasterPriority), advertisement/down timers, and an associated-IP-address table for the virtual router's addresses. This is squarely a software/protocol status monitoring MIB: an operator polls it to confirm which router currently holds the Master role, whether priorities are set as intended, and whether failover timers are configured correctly to avoid unnecessary role flapping. It parallels and depends conceptually on the standard IETF VRRP MIB while adding vendor-specific VRRPv3 detail. It is typically deployed on pairs or groups of Marvell/RADLAN-based Layer 3 switches providing redundant default-gateway service to end hosts, where RADLAN-VRRP SNMP monitoring confirms master/backup role assignment is behaving as expected.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RADLAN-VRRP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Marvell (formerly RADLAN) Layer 3 switches/routers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll rlVrrpv3OperationsTable, keyed by virtual router ID, to check rlVrrpv3OperationsMasterPriority and rlVrrpv3OperationsAdminState, confirming which device currently holds Master status, and would watch rlVrrpv3OperationsMasterDownInterval/rlVrrpv3OperationsSkewTime to verify failover timing is as configured. An unexpected change in the active master (visible via rlVrrpv3OperationsPrimaryIpAddrState) would signal a failover event, worth investigating for root cause.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VRRP master/backup role
  • VRRP priority
  • VRRP administrative state
  • master advertisement/down interval
  • virtual router associated IP addresses

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rlVrrpv3CountersChecksumErrors OID:

Select a Marvell (formerly RADLAN) Layer 3 switches/router (VRRPv3 gateway redundancy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rlVrrpv3CountersChecksumErrors into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of checksum errors received on this interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
