What Is RADLAN-DOT1X-MIB?

RADLAN-DOT1X-MIB is a vendor-private extension to the IEEE 802.1X standard, developed by RADLAN Computer Communications (whose switch operating software core was later used by Marvell) for managed Ethernet switches. It exposes configuration and status data for port-based network access control, including per-session authentication statistics, guest VLAN assignment, unauthenticated VLAN handling, and user-based VLAN mapping. In monitoring terms it tracks the software/authentication status of switch ports rather than physical hardware health: administrators can see which authentication method a session used, whether a port has fallen back to a guest or restricted VLAN, and aggregate statistics on 802.1X session outcomes. It builds directly on the IEEE 802.1X standard (companion to the standard IEEE8021-PAE-MIB), adding RADLAN-specific features such as guest VLAN and user-based VLAN support. It is typically deployed on enterprise access-layer switches where 802.1X network access control is enforced at the edge. Engineers can download the RADLAN-DOT1X-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RADLAN-DOT1X-MIB. If rldot1xGuestVlanSupported and rldot1xGuestVlanVID/rldot1xGuestVlanPorts show a port has shifted into the guest VLAN, that signals an endpoint failed 802.1X authentication and was quarantined. Checking rldot1xUnAuthenticatedVlanTable entries similarly reveals ports parked in a restricted VLAN pending credentials, useful for spotting misconfigured supplicants or rogue devices.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rldot1xAuthMultiEapolFramesRx OID:

Select a Marvell/RADLAN-based managed Ethernet switch, enterprise access-layer switch (802.1X port access control) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rldot1xAuthMultiEapolFramesRx into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of valid EAPOL frames of any type that have been received by this Authenticator. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
