Category: QoS
Description: Defines auxiliary IETF RAP policy device objects for storing policy rule data downloaded from policy servers.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is POLICY-DEVICE-AUX-MIB?
POLICY-DEVICE-AUX-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB from the RAP (Resource Allocation Protocol) policy framework, defining auxiliary objects that support policy-based provisioning of network devices, particularly storing policy rule data downloaded from a policy server. It exposes a policy interface table mapping interfaces to role combinations, along with storage type and row status for policy configuration entries, plus conformance groups for compliance. Its monitoring value is configuration/software-state focused: confirming which interfaces have policy roles assigned and whether policy rule rows are active, rather than exposing hardware sensors. It explicitly depends on the broader IETF policy-based networking framework (COPS/RAP) and is meant to be used alongside core policy-device MIBs. It is deployed on network devices participating in centralized, policy-server-driven QoS or access-control provisioning. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the POLICY-DEVICE-AUX-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in POLICY-DEVICE-AUX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- policy-managed routers and switches
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll policyInterfaceTable/policyInterfaceEntry rows keyed by policyInterfaceIfIndex to check policyInterfaceRoleCombo, which defines the policy role(s) applied to that interface, alongside policyInterfaceStorage and policyInterfaceStatus to confirm the row is permanently stored and active. An interface showing an unexpected or missing policyInterfaceRoleCombo would indicate that policy provisioning from the policy server failed to apply correctly to that interface.
What Can Be Monitored
- interface-to-policy-role mapping
- policy rule storage type
- policy rule row status
- policy provisioning state per interface
