Category: Nortel Passport WAN

Description: Handles upgrade operations, patch states, and software load versions on Nortel MsCarrier Passport WAN switch nodes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-SoftwareMIB?

This Nortel MIB is part of the MscPassport family for the Nortel Passport WAN switching platform and directly addresses software lifecycle management, covering software load versions, patch states, and upgrade/download operations on switch nodes. It exposes objects describing available software loads, ongoing tidy/cleanup operations, and download operations initiated against the node. It is explicitly a software-status monitoring MIB: administrators use it to check the currently loaded software version, whether a load is being tidied (cleaned up) or is mid-download, and whether an upgrade operation is progressing or stalled, making it directly relevant to tracking a device's software version and update health. It relies on the common MscPassport component-object conventions (row status, storage type, index) shared across the Passport MIB suite. It is used operationally on carrier Nortel Passport switch nodes during software upgrades, patch rollouts, and routine software inventory audits. Engineers can download the Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-SoftwareMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-SoftwareMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel Passport/MscCarrier WAN switch node

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls mscSwAvlTable to enumerate available software loads on the node, then checks mscSwOperTable for mscSwTidyStatus and mscSwAvBeingTidied to see whether a cleanup of an old load is in progress before starting a new download via mscSwDld. The mscSwRowStatusTable's mscSwRowStatus confirms whether a given software component entry is active or still being provisioned. A download that never completes, reflected in mscSwDld staying in a pending state, signals a failed or interrupted upgrade needing operator attention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • available software loads
  • software load tidy status
  • software download operation status
  • component row status
  • software version inventory
