Category: Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport, Voice & Telephony

Description: Defines SNMP objects for hunt group engine load-balancing and overflow policy on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-HuntGroupEngMIB?

This Nortel MIB, part of the MscPassport suite for the Nortel Passport WAN switching platform, manages the hunt-group engine responsible for load-balancing and overflow policy across trunk or line hunt groups. It exposes configuration and operational objects describing how many hunt groups exist and how call/connection attempts are distributed among them. For monitoring purposes it is used to check the operational health of the load-balancing engine itself, tracking hunt-group counts and attempt statistics to spot overflow conditions or an engine that has stopped distributing traffic correctly, which reflects on the switch's call-processing software health rather than physical hardware. It builds on the standard MscPassport component-object conventions (row status, storage type, component index) shared across the Passport MIB family. It is deployed on carrier Nortel Passport switches wherever hunt-group-based overflow routing is configured for voice or data trunk groups. Engineers can download the Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-HuntGroupEngMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-HuntGroupEngMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel Passport/MscCarrier WAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls mscLpEngHgsOperationalTable to read mscLpEngHgsHuntGroups (the count of configured hunt groups) and mscLpEngHgsHuntAttempts (the number of hunting attempts made), watching for a rising attempt count with no corresponding successful connections as a sign of overflow or congestion. The mscLpEngHgsRowStatusTable confirms that a given hunt-group engine component, identified by mscLpEngHgsIndex, is in the active row state. A component stuck in notInService while attempts continue to climb would point to a hunt-group engine that needs to be re-provisioned.

What Can Be Monitored

  • hunt group count
  • hunt attempt count
  • hunt-group engine row status
  • component storage type
