Category: Alarm & Fault Management, Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport

Description: Provides SNMP management objects for alarm reporting and fault status on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport mobile carrier switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-AlarmMIB?

This is the central alarm and fault-reporting MIB for the Nortel MSC Passport carrier switch, the mobile-carrier variant of the Magellan Passport platform, aggregating fault reports raised by every other component MIB on the switch. It exposes alarm severity (mscSeverity), alarm type and probable cause (mscAlarmType, mscProbableCause), event timestamp (mscEventTime), active-alarm status, and a real-time notification (mscAlarmTrap) for immediate trap delivery. This module exists explicitly to monitor overall hardware and software fault status: it is the point where administrators see which component (via mscComponentRowPointer/mscComponentName) currently has an active alarm, at what severity, and why, spanning hardware faults, software faults, and threshold conditions anywhere in the switch. It depends heavily on the Passport component-instance model shared across all other Passport MIBs, since every alarm references the alarming component. It is deployed as the central fault-management feed a carrier NOC polls or traps to when monitoring MSC Passport nodes in a mobile network backbone. Engineers can download the Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-AlarmMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-AlarmMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel MSC Passport mobile carrier switch

Monitoring Examples

A NOC monitoring system subscribes to mscAlarmTrap notifications and cross-references mscSeverity, mscAlarmType, and mscProbableCause to prioritize incoming faults, using mscComponentRowPointer/mscComponentName to identify exactly which component raised the alarm. mscActiveListStatus shows whether an alarm is still active or has cleared, and mscEventTime timestamps when it occurred. A surge of high-severity alarms sharing the same mscProbableCause across many components points to a common underlying hardware failure rather than isolated incidents.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active alarm list
  • alarm severity
  • alarm type / probable cause
  • alarm event timestamp
  • faulting component identity
