What Is Nortel-Magellan-Passport-TraceBaseMIB?

This MIB module is part of the Nortel (Bay Networks/Nortel Networks) Magellan Passport wide-area switch family, providing objects for configuring and controlling packet-level diagnostic tracing on the switch. It exposes configuration data for setting up trace sessions and trace receivers that capture packets flowing through specific switch components, rather than continuous performance counters. Administrators use it primarily to diagnose software and protocol-level behavior by creating trace row-status entries that select which component to trace and where captured data is stored, effectively monitoring the operational/diagnostic status of the tracing subsystem itself (row status, storage type) rather than classic hardware health. As a Nortel proprietary MIB it depends on the standard SNMPv2 row-status conventions (RFC 2579 RowStatus textual convention) for creating and destroying trace entries. It is typically deployed by carrier/service-provider network engineers troubleshooting Magellan Passport switches in legacy Nortel WAN/frame relay/ATM deployments. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the Nortel-Magellan-Passport-TraceBaseMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-Magellan-Passport-TraceBaseMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel Magellan Passport switch
  • Nortel/Bay Networks WAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would create an entry in traceRowStatusTable by setting traceComponentName and traceStorageType, then set traceRowStatus to active to begin capturing packets on a named switch component identified by traceIndex. Correspondingly, traceRcvrRowStatusTable/traceRcvrRowStatusEntry objects configure a trace receiver (traceRcvrComponentName, traceRcvrStorageType) that determines where the traced packets are delivered or stored. Watching traceRowStatus transition to notInService or destroy unexpectedly, or noticing storage type mismatches, would indicate a failed or misconfigured trace session.

What Can Be Monitored

  • trace session row status
  • traced component name
  • trace storage type
  • trace receiver status
  • trace index
