What Is NS-ROOT-MIB?

NS-ROOT-MIB is Citrix's enterprise-specific root MIB for the NetScaler (now Citrix ADC) application delivery controller product line, establishing the top-level OID hierarchy under which NetScaler's other functional MIBs (system, events, connections) hang. This module definition also carries connection- and load-balancing-related counters such as client/server connection totals and current counts, connection reuse hit/miss statistics, refused connections, and physical server counts. Operationally it supports performance and health monitoring of the appliance's software load-balancing engine: administrators track curClientConnections/curServerConnections and totPhysicalServers/curPhysicalServers to see live load and back-end server availability, and clientConnRefused to detect capacity exhaustion or attack conditions. It underlies (as the root object identifier) other NetScaler-specific MIB modules such as those covering system events (netScalerEvents) and web server statistics (wsSystem), so it has an inherent dependency relationship with the rest of the NetScaler MIB family. It is deployed exclusively on Citrix NetScaler/ADC application delivery appliances, typically in front of web application server farms, with the NS-ROOT-MIB MIB anchoring the OID tree that all other NetScaler modules reference.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NS-ROOT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling curClientConnections and curServerConnections over time can see live front-end vs. back-end connection load, while curPhysicalServers compared against totPhysicalServers reveals whether any real servers in a load-balanced group have dropped out of service. A rising clientConnRefused counter alongside falling reuseHit/reuseMiss ratios would indicate the NetScaler is running low on connection capacity or its connection-reuse pooling has degraded, both signs of impending service degradation.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using sysTotConfigChanges OID:

Select a Citrix NetScaler / Citrix ADC application delivery controller as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type sysTotConfigChanges into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of times a configuration change was made on the NetScaler appliance. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
