Category: OAM

Description: Provides network diagnostic objects for ping, traceroute, and connectivity testing via SNMP.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NETWORK-DIAGS?

NETWORK-DIAGS is a diagnostics MIB that exposes SNMP-triggerable ping and traceroute functionality for active network connectivity testing, conceptually similar to the IETF DISMAN-PING-MIB/DISMAN-TRACEROUTE-MIB. It provides tables for initiating and tracking ping tests (destination, owner, type, action, status) and traceroute tests (destination, owner) directly from the managed device, rather than exposing passive interface or environmental counters. Its use in monitoring device/software status is indirect but useful: it lets an administrator remotely verify network reachability and path health as seen from the device itself, helping distinguish 'device is up but network path is broken' from other fault conditions. It parallels IETF Disman ping/traceroute MIB conventions and typically sits alongside IF-MIB/IP-MIB for addressing context. It is deployed on routers, switches, or other network devices where built-in active-diagnostic capability is useful for remote troubleshooting, making it a common building block of NETWORK-DIAGS SNMP monitoring on those platforms.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NETWORK-DIAGS. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-derived diagnostic MIB, applicable to routers/switches supporting SNMP-triggered diagnostics

Monitoring Examples

An operator would create an entry in nwIpPingTable/nwIpPingEntry setting nwIpPingDestination, nwIpPingOwner, and nwIpPingType, then set nwIpPingAction to trigger the test and poll nwIpPingStatus for the result. Similarly, nwIpTraceRouteTable/nwIpTraceRouteEntry with nwIpTraceRouteDestination and nwIpTraceRouteOwner would be used to trace the path to a remote host. A ping test returning a failed nwIpPingStatus while the device's own interfaces show up would indicate a downstream network problem rather than a local device fault, and nwRevisionLevel/nwRevision would confirm which diagnostic engine version is running.

What Can Be Monitored

  • on-demand ping test destination/status
  • ping test owner/type
  • on-demand traceroute test destination
  • traceroute test owner
  • diagnostic engine revision level
